Sangre de Grado (Dragon's Blood) comes from the
tree
Croton lechieri, which grows native in the Columbian
Amazon and southward into Bolivia and Peru. A fresh gash of
the trunk runs white with latex, which quickly turns red
as this "dragon's blood" oxidizes with the
jungle air.
This reknowned tree is revered by nearly all the tribes
of the upper Amazon. The red latex that runs from
the tapped bark is used to abate tumors, seal wounds,
treat ulcers, soothe skin rashes, and reverse infections.
Sangre de Grado from Croton lechieri has been
shown in laboratory studies to have immunomodulatory
activity, to inhibit the proliferation of activated
T-cells, and to have antioxidant or pro-oxidant
properties.
