Trifal (also known as "Triphala" is a
combination of three herbs:
Terminalia chebula (Haritaki), Terminalia bellerica
(Bahera), and Embelica officinalis (Amla) and is
referred to in almost every Ayurvedic textbook. It is
considered to be adaptogenic. This combination has
synergistic action, as well as digestive and mild
diuretic properties.
- Haritaki is rich in tannins,
amino acids, succinic acid, and beta-sitosterol.
- Bahera is rich in tannins, and has antihistaminic,
antifungal, yeast-inhibiting, and choleretic effects.
- Amla supports the immune system and is one of the
richest available sources of Vitamin C.
Trifal™ has bowel-regulating and mild laxative
effects, aiding both digestion and elimination.
The digestive benefits of Triphala may be due to its
actions in:
- Binding to a digestive hormone linked with
gastrointestinal upset (cholecystokinin);
- Increasing bile acid excretion, raising levels of
healthy cholesterol (HDLs) and lowering levels of bad
cholesterol (LDLs and triglycerides); and
- Scavenging free radicals (antioxidant activity).
